Marshall fares well in per capita violent crime rankings

According to the book "CRIME IN THE UNITED STATES 2003", published by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and released October 25, 2004, there were a total of 1,381,259 violent crimes reported to law enforcement. For the nation as a whole, the United States had a per capita crime rate of 0.475 percent. The U.S. has a population of 290,809,777. The crimes that make up the violent crime index are murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.

By comparison, the state of Missouri, with an estimated population of 5,704,484 reported a total of 26,968 violent crimes for a per capita rate of 0.473 percent.

Marshall with a population of 12,157 reported two violent crimes (1 forcible rape and 1 robbery) for a violent crime rate of 0.016 percent per population. Sixty-six cities in Missouri with a population of more than 10,000 reported their crime to the FBI in 2003. Of those cities, Marshall had the lowest violent crime rate.

The violent crime rates in Missouri and the United States are 30 times that of Marshall's.

Of the 66 Missouri cities included in the FBI report, St. Louis had the highest per capita violent crime rates at 1.86 percent, or over 116 times that of Marshall.
